This privacy notice explains what information Nepenthes Journal collects when you visit our website, how it is used, how long it is kept, and the choices you have. We aim to collect as little as possible to operate the site, and to be straightforward about what we do collect.

Who is responsible for your data

Nepenthes Journal is the data controller for personal information collected through this website. If you have questions about how your data is handled, you can reach us at editor@nepenthesjournal.example.

Information we collect

We collect three broad categories of information:

  • Server logs. When you visit any page, our servers automatically record your IP address, the user-agent string sent by your browser, the URL you requested, the referring URL (if any), and a timestamp. These logs are used to investigate abuse, diagnose technical problems, and produce aggregated usage statistics. Raw logs are retained for 30 days and then deleted.
  • Analytics. We use a privacy-respecting analytics tool that does not set tracking cookies and does not record IP addresses in identifiable form. The analytics tool produces aggregated, non-identifying counts of page views, referrers, and broad geographic regions (typically country level). We do not build profiles of individual readers.
  • Information you give us directly. If you email the newsroom, send a tip, or submit a correction, we receive whatever you choose to send. We treat that information with the discretion appropriate to the channel you used. Sensitive tips sent over secure channels are handled separately and described on our contact page.

Cookies

This website uses only the cookies necessary for it to function — for example, to remember your preference between dark and light reading modes. We do not set tracking cookies for analytics or marketing on our own behalf.

Pages that display third-party advertising may cause those advertisers to set their own cookies. We describe this in the "Advertising" section below. You can refuse or delete cookies at any time through your browser settings; doing so may affect some site functionality.

Advertising

Where advertising appears on this site, it is currently served by Google AdSense. AdSense may use cookies and similar technologies to show personalised ads based on your activity across other websites. We do not control what data Google collects or how it uses it; their practices are documented in Google's advertising policies.

You can opt out of personalised advertising in Google's settings, or use the controls provided by your operating system or browser. If you live in a jurisdiction that requires opt-in consent for advertising cookies, you will see a consent banner the first time you visit the site.

How we use information

We use the information we collect to:

  • operate, secure and improve the website,
  • respond to messages, tips and corrections,
  • understand which stories readers find useful, in aggregate,
  • detect and prevent abuse, fraud, and illegal activity.

We do not sell personal information. We do not share personal information with third parties except as described in this notice, or where we are required to by law.

How long we keep information

  • Raw server logs: 30 days.
  • Aggregated, non-identifying analytics: indefinitely (it cannot be linked back to you).
  • Correspondence with the newsroom: as long as is reasonably needed to respond and to keep a record of corrections and complaints — typically up to 7 years for material related to published stories.
  • Sensitive tips received over secure channels: handled separately; retention practices are described to sources at the point of contact.

Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have legal rights to:

  • access the personal information we hold about you,
  • request that we correct inaccurate information,
  • request that we delete information, where we are not legally required to retain it,
  • object to certain processing, or ask us to restrict it,
  • lodge a complaint with your local data-protection authority.

To exercise any of these rights, please email editor@nepenthesjournal.example. We aim to respond within 30 days. We may need to verify your identity before acting on certain requests, particularly requests for access or deletion.

Children

This website is not directed at children under the age of 16, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will delete it.

Security

We take reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect information against unauthorised access, alteration, disclosure or destruction. No system is perfectly secure; if we ever discover a breach affecting personal information, we will notify affected individuals and relevant authorities as required by law.

International transfers

Our servers are located in jurisdictions described in our annual transparency report. If you visit the site from outside those jurisdictions, your information will be transferred to and processed in them. Where the law of your jurisdiction requires specific safeguards for international transfers, we put those safeguards in place.

Changes to this notice

We update this notice from time to time as our practices change or as required by law. The "Last updated" date at the top of this page reflects the most recent change. We will publish a brief summary of substantive changes on the site for at least 30 days after they take effect.
